Account Opening FAQ

  1. How many accounts can I open with BNB?

Ans: There is no restriction on the number of accounts you can open. You can open multiple accounts as long as you have specific purposes to open and provide the required documents to the bank.

2. What are the documents required to open a saving account?

Ans.

  1. Account opening form
  2. One recent passport size photo
  3. One legal stamp
  4. Valid CID copy

3. What are the documents required to open a current account?

Ans.

i. For Sole Proprietorship company

  1. Account opening form signed and sealed
  2. Valid Trade license
  3. Owner’s CID copy
  4. One PP size photo
  5. Authorization from owner/ proprietor if the account is to be operated by another person

ii. Partnership Company

In addition to i above,

  1. Registered partnership deed/ MOU
  2. Company resolution/ decision to open account with BNB and approving their signatory for the account

iii. Private/ Public limited Companies

In addition to i above,

  1. CIDs of Directors/ shareholders/ account operator
  2. Article of incorporation/ Association

iv. NGOs/ Trust/ Club/ Tshogpa/ Religious Associations

  1. Certificate of Registration with relevant authority, for CSO/ CRO
  2. If not registered with relevant authority, resolution/ MOM for opening account and authorized signatory.
  3. Authorization letter signed by head of agency (if applicable)

v. Government Bodies

  1. Approval from the Ministry of Finance
  2. Authorization from the Head of Agency stating who will
  3. CID copy of account operators
  4. One PP size photo of the account operator
  5. Office seal

4. What are the documents required to open Piggy and minor account?

Ans.

  1. Account opening form
  2. PP size photo of the child and parent/guardian
  3. Copy of family tree/ birth Certificate/ health card, where their names, DOB and parents’ details are mentioned.
  4. CID copy of parent/guardian

5. Why Piggy Bank account? What is the benefit or advantage of Piggy Bank account?

Ans. Piggy Bank accounts are meant for children aged between 4 and 15. The primary objective of this product is to encourage saving habits among our children from a young age, through a dedicated and attractive product for them.

6. How can I convert my piggy or minor account to a regular saving account?

Ans. Piggy and Minor accounts must be converted to a regular saving account when the account holder attains the age of 15. This is to provide financial autonomy to them as they can operate their account independently after converting to a regular account. For the conversion, you should visit a BNB office and fill up a form (Piggy to Regular saving account conversion form), which is available on our website. You need to submit the child’s CID copy and a recent half photo. The parent/ guardian also needs to sign the form.

7. How can Bhutanese Living Abroad (BLA) open an account with BNB?

Ans. Bhutanese living abroad can open account through the Remit Bhutan portal: https://www.remitbhutan.bt

8. When do I need to update my information?

Ans. You need to update your information whenever there are changes to your personal details such as address, contact information, employment status, nominee details or any other relevant information that the bank requires to maintain accurately. Additionally, updates might be necessary when you want to change your signature or photo as these are your primary identities.

9. How can I update my account?

Ans. You can update your account information by either visiting the nearest BNB office with a valid CID copy for a savings account and a license copy for your current account. Alternatively, you can update it through our online service at https://forms.bnb.bt/forms/account-detail-update-form.

10. How can I update my signature or photo for my account?

Ans. For that, please visit the bank and fill out the signature update form.  You need to carry a copy of your CID. Alternatively, you can send the form and CID copy to update@bnb.bt. Please note that the Bank will verify your email and signature submitted earlier for updating with the new ones.

If you are residing abroad, please include residency proof (visa copy/ student card/ working card/ utility bills) along with the form and CID.

11. How can I add or remove signatory(s) to/ from my account?

Ans. To add or remove signatory(s) to/ from your account, you need to write an application to the Bank stating clearly to add or remove signatures. In both the cases, the current/ existing signatory must sign the application.

12. How to open a joint account if one account holder lives abroad?

Ans. To open a joint account with one account holder residing abroad, the person living abroad needs to fill the account opening form and send it to update@bnb.bt along with his CID copy and residency proof (working card, student card, visa, or utility bill). Please note that your signature must match our bank records. After receiving the documents, the person in Bhutan can visit our bank and sign the form.

13. How to activate my account which has been closed?

Ans. To activate your account, fill the account opening form with the required documents for opening a savings account.

14. What is a dormant account? What to do if my account has become dormant?

Ans. An account becomes dormant if you have not initiated any transaction in your account for one year (365 days). You will not be able to initiate transactions from MPay if your account has become dormant.

You can re-activate a dormant account by either depositing cash over the      counter or by transferring an amount to the account through MPay.

15. How to check an account status, whether it is closed, dormant or active?

Ans. To check your account status, you can either visit our nearest branch or inquire through our toll-free number 6070 or message us on WhatsApp at 17123313 or email us at update@bnb.bt

16. How to close my account?

Ans. You can close your account by either writing us an application or filling the account closing form. Account signatories must sign the form.

17. How can I check my account balance on-line?

Ans. You can check your account balance on our mobile banking App, MPay.

18. How to obtain my account statement?

Ans. You can get your bank statement from:

  • any of our branch offices
  • our MPay (only for the past three months)
  • Send an email to update@bnb.bt
  • You can authorize someone to collect your account statement on your behalf by giving a one-time authorization

19. How do I get my statement on monthly basis?

Ans. Please write an application requesting a monthly statement signed by authorized signatories. Email it to update@bnb.bt

20. How can I get a cheque book?

Ans. You can request for a cheque book by filling the cheque book request form signed by the authorized signatories. You can also request online via MPay.

21. What to do if someone has lost a cheque or the entire cheque book?

Ans. Immediately inform the Bank with an application to cancel the cheque. You should mention the cheque number(s).
